Oily Roots + Dry Ends? Here’s Why (And What To Do About It)

You’re not imagining it—your scalp feels oily by day two, but your ends look like straw. It’s one of the most common concerns we see behind the chair, and it almost always comes down to imbalance.
When your scalp and strands start speaking different languages, it’s time to translate. Here’s what’s really going on—and how to bring your hair back into harmony.
1. Wash smarter, not harsher.
Over-washing can trick your scalp into overproducing oil. Try spacing your shampoos to every 2–3 days and focus your lather at the scalp using fingertips (not nails). Rinse thoroughly, then let your conditioner work on your mid-lengths and ends. Think gentle, not squeaky.
2. Re-hydrate without weighing down.
Skip heavy masks at the root and show your ends some love instead. Work a small amount of conditioner from mid-shaft to tips, detangle gently, and leave it on for at least two minutes before rinsing. The goal is moisture that moves, not weight that lingers.
3. Refresh in between.
On day two or three, a light dry shampoo at the crown can buy time without buildup. Flip your head upside down, spray at the roots, and massage in with your fingertips (no scratching!). If your ends feel coarse, warm a drop of oil between your palms and lightly press it through the bottom few inches. Instant reset.
4. Protect from heat.
Oily roots often pair with heat-damaged ends. Always apply a lightweight thermal protectant before blow-drying or flat-ironing, and let your hair air-dry halfway first when you can. Small steps like these keep everything in balance.
